Imagine spending every waking hour of every day completely alone.
Never seeing anyone.
Never talking to anyone.
The only interaction you have with other living beings is when they stare at you, flash cameras in your face, or feed you dead fish. And you didn’t even do anything wrong to deserve solitary confinement!
This is Bella’s life. She lives in a tiny tank in Seoul’s Lotte World Aquarium. All alone. (Not to be confused with Bella the Beluga that recently gave birth in America.)
She was supposed to go back into the wild after almost ten years of captivity. After her two tank mates died in 2016 and 2019, Bella is still living in the same place she watched her friends die.
You have the special opportunity to get on board and help to free Bella back into the wild today. She’ll be much happier when she’s back with her friends and allowed to roam free.

Why Whales need to be FREE
Whales live in families. They form relationships and emotional bonds – almost just like humans do.
Now imagine you were completely alone for the last two years. Yes, sure, isolation might have felt a bit like that. But even Covid restrictions aren’t as bad as living in the same place your only two friends in the world died.
Poor Bella has been stuck in a tank looking at the same four walls her friends died in for almost two years!
Belugas like Bella live in families of about ten. So she was already a bit lonely, even with two friends. But life has gotten worse over the last while. And people don’t seem to care – they still pay to go see her and take photos.
Learning about Belugas might be important – but we need to remember that they have feelings too. Being stuck in a small space is making her angry and sad. You would be too! And it isn’t good for her health either!
Empty Promises…
Bella’s captors promised they would do everything in their power to release her after her last friend died. Unfortunately, Covid hit shortly after. This made it more difficult to get things ready for her release.
But now it seems like all the effort has stopped. Her caretakers are saying they want to keep her health and adaptability a priority. But if you’re home-sick and lonely, you are going to be unhealthy and sad.
The longer they wait to make a good plan to release her, the worse she gets! She needs to be released as soon as possible to make sure she has a fighting chance in the wild. Otherwise, she will be too lonely and sad to connect with other Belugas. Or to remember how to catch her own fish!
What you can do
