China has a new attraction – the Polar Bear Hotel. It forms part of the Harbin sealife and polar exhibit. But that’s no excuse for the barren enclosures and constant gawking. That’s right, these polar bears get no downtime. They’re on display 24/7. And they have nothing except one plastic bottle to keep themselves busy with!
Blessing or Curse?
Sure, polar bears are facing extinction already. The icecaps are melting and their natural habitat is being destroyed. And that’s all thanks to climate change… So, in some ways the polar bear hotel might sound like a nice place for polar bears to visit – it’s not! These majestic creatures are stuck in teeny tiny glass cages. And the worst part is, they are being watched. All. The. Time!
Imagine being stuck in a glass box about the size of your living room. Yeah, sure, there’s air conditioning and you get free food – but that’s it. There’s no TV. No couches. No magazines. Just a crummy pool that’s really difficult to get in and out of. Oh, and hundreds of people stare at you every minute of every day.
How bored would you be? How frustrated would you get? And at the end of the day, how long would you want to live like that?!
Stop the Exploitation
Polar bears are roaming creatures. Their territory in the wild covers thousands of miles. They walk around, hunt, explore, learn, and even socialize a bit when they’re free. But the polar bears at this hotel do nothing but watch people watch them. They don’t get a break. They don’t get any entertainment. All they are is THE entertainment. It’s like being the main act on stage – but the show never ends!
You can make a difference though. With each signature, our cause starts to carry more weight. If you feel like the polar bears at the hotel deserve a better life, sign the petition today!
Even if they aren’t retired to a sanctuary – every signature will make a difference – even if that difference is just to give them more entertaining and natural living spaces. In an ideal world this would have things like:
- live fish to catch
- ice boulders to climb, break or just chill on,
- Some downtime away from human eyes.
- Fun games and puzzles.
It’s obvious that polar bears don’t stand a great chance in their natural environment anymore… But they still deserve a well-rounded life. Even if they live in what boils down to a studio apartment with no option of roaming the city.
Help these guys get a better life and sign the petition to improve their circumstances today!
